Chapter Twelve

Mia wasn't sure what to do on the day Garrick returned to the cottage on Lily Pond Lane. So much had happened in less than a year. It was crazy. She wanted to see Ella, and was almost as eager to meet baby Flora in the flesh, and of course she wanted to see Garrick, give him a hug and tell him she was there for him and always would be. Except she wasn't. Not totally. She was with Jet.

In the end, it was Jet who made up her mind for her.

'I think we should be there when he arrives,' Jet said. 'Show him our support, tell him to call us if he needs anything at all, but give him his breathing space. Undoubtedly, Hettie will make her presence known, and Glen told Gill that, as the local vicar, he feels he should introduce himself in case Garrick needs him. Although he probably won't do that today. Glen's a good guy. He'll know the right time. If I were in Garrick's shoes, I'd want to be left alone to settle in and then start seeing people in my own good time, not have everyone land on the doorstep the minute I arrive.'

'That makes sense,' Mia said. 'Perhaps we should drop into Hettie and Fred on the way, and suggest she leaves it for a day or two.'

Which is exactly what they did.

When Garrick, Ella and baby Flora pulled into the drive of Sunbeam Cottage in Garrick's van, most of Garrick's belongings piled in the back, it reminded Mia of that day last May when she, Ella and Garrick first arrived in Little Pondale; he in his van, following behind Mia and Ella in Mia's old car. Except no one had been on the doorstep to greet them.

At the time, she'd seen it as a fresh start, a new beginning, not just for her but for Ella and Garrick too. And boy what an adventure they'd all been on. More so in Mia's case. Discovering all Mattie's secrets. Well, most of them. Even now, Mia felt there might be more things still waiting to be uncovered as far as great-aunt Matilda was concerned. Falling in love; falling out of love; inheriting a fortune; meeting the man of her dreams; getting engaged. Twice. Making so many new friends, and finally finding out where her future truly lay. With Jet. She often felt she had been searching for Jet her entire life and at the age of thirty-three, she'd found him.

But why was she thinking about such things now? Garrick was getting out of the van.

It was as if his eyes automatically focused on her, and for a moment, he stood in the drive, staring at her.

Until Ella tumbled out of the passenger seat and screamed at the top of her lungs: 'We're here!'

Gill ambled towards her. 'Really? We hadn't noticed.' Then both he and Ella burst into a run and fell into each other's arms. 'I've missed you so much,' he said between kisses.
